At times it seems that your worst hair day may last the entire winter season.

It’s either rebellingagainst cold, dry weather and waving around like cobwebs in search of a corner or scaring the bejeebers out of the flat iron by exploding into a mutinous frizz. We get your dilemma!Here are… basic building blocks to keep hair happy, healthy and cooperative this season.

WASHING:

Wash hair 2 – 3 times a weekmax. Preserving natural hair oils in winter is crucial since they’re designed to lubricate and protecthair. Shampooing too frequently precipitates the vicious cycle of kicking the production of natural hair oils into overdrive so that you need to keep washing it – and over washing coloured hair is a sheen-killer. Try a couple of no-shampoo daysand rinse your hair under a warm shower instead.

A water-only rinse will also removesalt and sweat after a gym workout without stripping the essential oils necessary to keeping hair happy. Curly hair has the advantage in that it’s able to go longerbetween washes because it’s more of a roller coaster ride for the natural oils to reach the ends.

Friends:

  • Dry shampoo reducesoil build-up, adds texture and refreshes roots and tips between washes – try Girlz Only.
  • Mild, moisture-rich and preferably sulfate-free shampoo. Try Ogx Kukui Oils (anti-frizz)

Foes:

  • Hot showersdry and tangle hair which leads to breakage.

SHAMPOO AND CONDITIONER:

Choose a quality shampoo and conditionerthat is right for your hair type, the season and the level of hair damage. The amount of shampoo required depends on hair length and thickness. Less is more!An invigorating scalp massage while you wash stimulates blood circulationandpromotesstronger, healthier hair growth.

Press rinsed hair into a towel to remove excess water and avoid any friction. Conditioner is unableto penetrate dripping hair shafts, it’s more effective on damp hair because it needs to be able to deliver the moisture necessary to maintainhealth and shine.

Friends:

  • Leave-In conditioners and serums seal moistureinto the hair shaft and smoothe the cuticles to give sheen and help prevent fly-away hair and split ends.
  • Hair masques offerdeep conditioning to smooth cuticles, lock in moisture, increase hair softness and bump up shine.

Foes:

  • A humidifier in the house in dry winter areas.
  • A brush on wet hair.

HAIR STYLING:

Use a wide tooth comb on wet hairand if heat is involved in styling, semi-dry hair to reduce exposure time to heat. Use styling products with a heat shieldto protect hair and hold the style so that you don’t need to use heat-styling tools daily. Use flat irons and curling irons with cautionas concentrated heat can damage hair.

Foes:

  • Regular trims to control split ends and the right hair brush.

Friends:

  • Rubber bands for fastening hair, tightly pulled back ponytails and braids.

ITCHY SCALP:

Some tips to remedy the situation:

  • Dry scalp: a very mild shampoo and a nourishing conditioner or hair masque.
  • Psoriasis: Shampoos with coal tar or salicylic acid.

  • Ringworm: Medicated shampoos won’t work. You’ll need a prescription for oral anti-fungal medication.

DANDRUFF:

This may worsenin winter owing to a lack of humidity and reduced UV intensity from the sun (UV radiation helps control yeast proliferation). The flakes are mostly caused by natural hair oils clumping together with dead skin cells.Apart from the many OTC products that deal with dandruff, try a shampoo that containsselenium sulphide, zinc pyrithione, coal tar or tea-tree oil.
