Defeating Winter Dryness
“Mother Nature may be forgiving this year, or next year, but eventually she’s going to come around and whack you. You’ve got to be prepared.”
Note to self:Define‘whack’. A klap hard enough to make my eyes water or a gentle reprimand? Surely not. But then again, if Mother Nature can rustle up bolts of lightning, floods, volcanoes and earthquakes perhaps challenging her to a game of Russian Roulette may be a bit like poking the bear. Besides, losing is demoralising so ‘be prepared’ it is!
Cold weather can be brutal on the skin because wind and artificial heating are moisture vampires. The solution is to increase water content and repair the skin’s natural barrier. This can be achieved internally by drinking water throughout the day, switching to caffeine-free beverages like herbal teas, and cutting back on alcohol consumption. Externally, the skin needs more intensive moisturization– apart from the discomfort, cracked skin represents a welcome mat for bacteria.
Without adequate moisturization, skin will look dull, chalky or ashen. When upping the amp to prepare for drier skin, be guided by degree of skin dryness, skin type, life stage and budget. Check out our suggestions per category for the pre-winter switch:
